yum!! the meat was really tender 6: it is a great place to go with your family. the vibe is nice :)
Walked in last night during a chilly evening. This was the cozy meal to hit the spot. Seated quickly around 7pm on a weeknight. Shares a parking lot with Steamy Piggy and other popular restaurants, but at least there is spill over street parking in addition to this crowded lot. Between 2 people, we shared the BosSam + Soon Dubu (combo) and the Personal size Hae Jang Guk. Both were absolutely delicious and the appetizers are refillable if you ask for them. The fishcake cold dish was a bit flavorless in comparison to what I've enjoyed in the past, but everything else was good, especially their kimchi. Service wasn't bad either for a place on Convoy. Our waiter checked in multiple times and the food came out quickly, stews still boiling aggressively. Cold water is self-serve with a pitcher, and you can ask for hot water instead too. The Combo is so convenient if you don't have enough people or appetite to order the big BosSam dish. In general I feel like their portions are either a personal size, or super shareable for a big party, so there's a good range. BosSam pork slices melt in your mouth, soft and fatty, with the perfect subtle flavor and crunchy compliments (cold cabbage, shrimp paste, fresh garlic, etc) to wrap them in. Soon Dubu was pretty basic. Comforting soybean flavor, bean sprouts, chewy interesting textures. Speaking of garlic, the Hae Jang Guk was SO flavorful. We wanted to do the bigger one, but opted for the personal size instead. It was still plenty of food. The flavor of this hot soup is so addicting - I think because there is a huge chunk of minced garlic on top of the soup (in case you want to take some off), veggies, hearty pork bone broth, fall off the bone meat. After taking a sip of the Hae Jang Guk, my Soon Dubu immediately tasted way less flavorful. The combos are such a bang for your buck, especially if you have leftovers. THANK YOU, PAST SELF! Can't wait to come back and try more.
This place has its own private parking but very limited. We came on a Tuesday at 5 pm. We got lucky finding a parking spot right away. On our way out, the parking lot was full and people waiting to leave. We walked in at the restaurant and were seated right away/. The place was still empty. Only 2 other tables occupied. But by the time we left the restaurant, there was a waiting list. We ordered the gamjatang that can feed 2, tteokboki; and fried rice. The soup was very hearty. Pork was very tender and fall off the bones. Definitely something to come back to. It was delicious. Tteokboki was a little disappointing. It was dry and needed more sauce. The rice cake was a little to aldente for me. But taste was good. The fried rice was cooked in the same pot as the soup and the burnt rice at the bottom gave it a nutty taste to it. This place is definitely a great place to go back to. Especially, on a cold day
Big entrées + refillable banchan = enough for multiple meals. Met a girlfriend for lunch and we each ordered a "Personal" Hae Jang Guk/Spicy Pork Bone Soup (pork bone, baby Napa cabbage, potato pasta, green onion, red chili), which was a ton of food when served with rice and accoutrements. Neither of us needed dinner later that day! Even better, we didn't have to sacrifice quality for quantity - ingredients and flavors were exactly as they should be. Service was efficient and responsive if not particularly proactive, and the space clean and bright albeit chairs are way too close together for separate parties. Parking during lunch time even on a weekday was a nightmare, but that's not the restaurant's fault!
So. Damn. Good. These might be fighting words, but Jomaru may be serving up the best Korean food in San Diego. Every meal here feels like home. So comforting, so warm, and so familiar. It tastes *almost* like mom's. My friends have told me that a pretty reliable litmus test for scouting out the best Korean restaurants is judging them by their kimchi. Good kimchi almost always equates to good food and boy oh boy is Jomaru's good. If one day they decide to jar it and sell it, I'll be the first in line. So far, my favorite dish has to be their Hae Jang Guk (Personal Spicy Pork Bone Soup). I'd say this is a pretty good alternative if you're coming alone or don't have people to share their signature Gam-Ja-Tang (Spicky Pork Bone Soup in Hot Pot) with. It features Pork Bone (literally some of the most tender, fall-off-the-bone meat you'll ever have), baby napa cabbage, potato pasta (sujebi- my fav!), green onion, and red chili. It's super rich, not too spicy, and feels like it could heal you with every sip. Highly highly recommend!
I recently went to Jomaru while I was in SD and craving Korean food. It is a spacious restaurant and a nice place for a casual meal. We went on a weekday at lunch time and were able to get seated immediately, but the restaurant was already fairly busy. Service was prompt and friendly and we got our food in less than 10 minutes from sitting down. We ordered only the gamjatang to try. The soup was rich and flavorful, with tender chunks of meat that practically fell off the bone. I also appreciated the side dishes as they all were fresh and seasoned well. The portion was very generous and the picture doesn't do it justice. There were 6-7 large bones full of meat and we ended up not being able to finish before being stuffed. Highly recommend when you're craving a flavorful soup especially when the weather cools down!
Gam-ja-tang pork was delicious and fell off the bone- we got two larges plus ramen. Bon chon was alright. I wish there were more veggies in the bowl personally. We did have to wait 15 minutes for a table since we have a group of 6 but the Yelp Waitlist was super easy. We shared a table with strangers so it was a little tight but the service was good. They add a 18% service charge for parties of 6 or more and our server also mentioned it when brining the check, so no complaints here. The fried rice afterwards with the cheese was my favorite part lol. They torched the cheese and 10/10 would eat that again.
